The Power of Self

I am going through a lot of things right now.  But you could never tell that by looking at me or talking to me.  Why?  Because of my mindset.

To be honest, I have actually amazed myself.  The old me would be stressed beyond belief, dealing with two court cases, hostile family members, and a crazy ex all at the same time.  But the incredible thing is that none of that stuff even bothers me.

I truly believe that I am extraordinary and unstoppable.  I know within myself that I am bigger than any of these obstacles and I’m just not overwhelmed.  I am totally calm in the realization that I am bigger than the problems before me and that I have what it takes to overcome them.

I noticed this attitude even in my prayer time this morning.  Instead of asking God to remove the situations or help me get through it, all I asked Him to do was to help me bring to the forefront the spirit and mindset I have within myself to overcome the obstacles.

That’s amazing to me.  Even when talking to God during the most honest time in my day, I felt like I already had what I needed to handle any problem I’m faced with.

Understand, I do believe that God blessed me with the skills that I now possess as well as a mindset that expects the best.  I just don’t need Him to baby me.  I feel like I can stand on my own two feet against the obstacles life presents because of what He has already blessed me with.  Of course I can still call on Him for things I can’t handle alone, like keeping my family in great health and being safe while traveling, but I don’t feel the urge to whip out a huge rocket launcher just to swat a fly.

For those of us who do believe in a higher power, shouldn’t this be the goal?  To look to that power not as a spiritual Santa Claus looking to fulfill our every desire, but rather as a being to help us equip ourselves to help ourselves?

I understand that there are those who just don’t feel confident enough to take on the problems and obstacles the world presents.  I know that sometimes the world can be a daunting and intimidating place.

To that person I suggest asking whatever higher power you believe in not to remove the situations, but rather to grow you to a point where you feel empowered enough to take on the situations.

I believe every single one of us has the potential within ourselves to be powerful and unstoppable; it’s simply a matter of tapping into that power.  Once you do, trust me, your life will forever change.

To clarify, I was not born this way.  For more time than I’d care to admit, I struggled with timidity, a feeling which stems primarily out of fear.

And there you have it.  There you have the one thing, the single factor that holds most of us back from achieving our potential: fear.

So from this point, I present a challenge.  When thoughts of fear come into your mind, when a voice tells you that something is impossible or that you’re not good enough to get what you want out of life, I challenge you to speak back to that voice.  Call it what it is, a liar.  Thank it for sharing then push it out of your mind.

Ultimately, we hold the power over our own lives.  We hold the power over what thoughts we allow to live inside of our minds.  We can make a conscious decision to do anything we want and to not settle for anything less.

We can control our mindset, and our mindset controls our lives.

There is an old saying that fits in perfectly here: “Whether you believe you can or you believe you can’t you’re absolutely right.”

Now I’m not naive.  I know that sometimes you’re going to be scared.  It’s a perfectly normal, human reaction.  But what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary is the ability to not let your fear immobilize you, to act in spite of your fear.  What makes a person extraordinary is realizing deep within themselves that they are bigger than any problem or obstacle and making a determination deep within themselves that nothing will stop them from reaching their goal.

And that, my friends, is the only way to truly reach the path of greatness.

We’ll talk again…
