My name is Dion Bickham and I am extraordinary.
Before I go any further, allow me to explain myself. I’m sure the majority of people reading this have never heard of me and are wondering who I am and why I consider myself extraordinary.
The truth is I’m not much different from anybody who is reading this. I wasn’t born into a wealthy family. I don’t have a multitude of letters following my name. I’m just a regular guy. So what sets me apart from the average Joe? What gives me the right to call myself “extraordinary”?
You see, I know and understand my purpose. I know the reason why I exist. I know why I am here and I know what I need to be doing. And I have made a determination to do what I am put here to do to the best of my ability as long as there is breath left in my body.
That essentially is what I believe separates the ordinary from the extraordinary: knowing your purpose in life, knowing what it is you were created to do, and resolving in your heart, soul and mind to achieve that purpose, literally using nearly every waking moment to move yourself towards the accomplishing of your purpose.
I believe that everyone has a talent that sets them apart from everyone else, one unique thing that they can do that gives them unparalleled joy. For some it’s writing, while for others it’s artistry. Still others can sing, motivate others, or come up with incredible business plans. There are even more people who can act or direct others or possess natural leadership. Talents are as varied as people, and I believe that no two are exactly alike.
The challenge lies in finding out what talent you possess. In order to do this, you have to ask yourself a question: what is it that you truly love to do? What is the one thing you can do that separates you from the pack? What is it that you can do in a way that no one else can?
Once you ask yourself those questions there is something else that you must ask yourself: What is your dream?
The answer to those questions will pave the way for you to live an extraordinary life.
You see, once your purpose and dream have met one another, something amazing happens. You start to see things you couldn’t see before, and you start to realize that it is entirely possible to live a fulfilling life. You start making connections and suddenly realize that your dreams are not so far away after all. Excitement builds, and you begin to take steps towards living that life that you always wanted…
Or you don’t. You instead convince yourself that you can’t get what you really want. You talk yourself out of your vision and instead elect to settle for a life of mediocrity and being average. You rationalize that you can’t do it because you aren’t smart enough, you’ve waited too long, you’re too old, or you just don’t have the energy.
And therein lies the choice.
Everyone must make the decision for themselves. No one can make it for you. You must decide deep within yourself if you are willing to do what it takes to be extraordinary or if you are content with being ordinary.
Before I end this, I’ll share with you my story.
A long time ago, when I was a teenager, I discovered that I had a talent for writing. I absolutely loved it. However, I was too shy to share what I had written with others. But I still wanted to write so I wrote. By the time I was in my early twenties I had a notebook full of poems, short stories, and even a full-length novel.
During my college years I took a chance and actually shared two of my short stories with my English professor. He was blown away and told me that I should be getting paid for what I was doing. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to do anything more than to keep writing and sharing it with a select few individuals. Even though everyone I shared my work with enjoyed it, I still balked at the idea of sharing my work with the world, declaring that I would do so “some day”.
Years later, I lost my mother. Her passing did something to me: it made me realize that life is not a guaranteed thing, that it is fleeting, here one moment and gone the next. It was that loss, that single moment that made me realize that I don’t have forever, that if I ever want to achieve my dream I’d better get to it!
Shortly thereafter, I started writing a novel…but this time it was different. I wasn’t writing this novel for myself. This time I was writing it for the world. I made a determination that this was it, that this would be the novel that I would publish, that I would deliver to the world!
As I was writing the novel, another revelation came to me: I really loved what I was doing! I loved the idea that people all over the world would read what I was writing. It excited me and propelled me to work even harder!
As I continued, I began to dream about how I could spend more time writing. All I wanted to do was write, write, write! I wanted to write novels, short stories, poems, a blog…you name it!
I discovered my passion, my talent, the thing I was put here to do…and I couldn’t be happier!
I now wake up excited for the day. I have made a plan to spend the majority of my time writing. I am truly excited about life now that I have discovered my purpose!
You can do it too. Again, there is nothing about me that stands out. I’m a regular guy…with an extraordinary mindset.
Find your talent. See your dream. Marry the two to define your purpose. Then make the choice as to whether or not you will live life as ordinary or become extraordinary.
The decision is and always will be yours to make.
